Whilst I know the experience of calling prospects is heavily regarded as cold calling tips and clever tactics, I believe it is so much more than that. It is about how to prospect for new clients by starting customer conversations.

With only ‘two new’ business development appointments per week over a year that can result in 20 ‘new’ customers per annum. This can make or break a business.

If you ask someone for help usually if that person likes you they will generally help you. If you are kind, usually someone will be kind back.

So the saying, “When you smile the whole world smiles with you” is very true. You “get” the reaction you “give.” As humans, we often mirror the reaction we get. That means that mostly what comes next is largely a reflection of what came before.

Then what we need to do is to quietly prepare the other person to achieve those outcomes. It needs to be done very casually using my cold calling tips so they don’t even feel it is happening.

Even on the phone we can all sense when someone is smiling, pre-occupied or annoyed. Being authentic and genuine is absolutely important. Try not to play with your keyboard, answer emails or Google search when you are on the phone speaking with someone.

Successful people have often experienced being told “No” many times. With each time it has heightened their resolve to get a “Yes.” Remember, it is nothing “personal”. This person does not know you.

They may in fact be having a bad day. Just accept it and move on. Each call you make takes you another step towards expert status and the person who really has practical skills and knows how to prospect for new clients is a valuable person indeed.
